Beginning To Play Acoustic Guitar

The acoustic guitar is a popular
instrument amongst all age groups and is
a very rewarding instrument to learn to
play even though you do not get to fool
around with cool electric guitar sounds.
So let us take a look at the techniques
you will learn as an acoustic guitar
player and some legendary guitarists
whose work will need to become familiar
with in order to hang out with other
acoustic guitar players.

You can think of acoustic guitar
technique in two ways: you can be a
strummer or a picker. A strummer plays
by dragging your thumb, index finger or
plectrum across the guitar strings. You
can find a multitude of strumming
patterns on the internet. Start with the
simplest you can find. Some strumming
patterns simply show the names of the
chords you are supposed to be strumming,
and others show that you include only
selected strings. The strings that are
not included can be damped with the
little finger of the left hand or the
heel of the right hand.

You can pick using a plectrum - this
technique is called flatpicking - or use
your fingers. If you decide on
fingerpicking you might want to use
picks which fit on the thumb and tips of
your fingers. Steel strings are hard on
the fingernails so you might need
fingerpicks to stop your nails being
torn to shreds. Nylon strings do not
demand the use of picks but after you
have had some experience playing guitar
you can make the decision based on the
kind of sound you want.

A simple start to fingerpicking is to
finger an E minor chord and place your
fingers on the strings you intend to
play. Do not try and do any picking,
just decide which strings are the ones
you are playing in this chord and place
your right hand fingers in a plucking
"stance" ready to play. So for the E
minor chord you could place your thumb
on the sixth string and your first
finger on the third string, you second
finger on the second string and your
first finger on the first string. Now
pluck each string by pressing down with
the thumb and pulling up with the
fingers.

If you want to see what you can do if
you foster your devotion to the acoustic
guitar, Leo Kottke is a good start. He
is an innovative fingerstyle acoustic
guitarist who is strongly influenced by
folk music, jazz and blues. Another
great is Tommy Emmanuel, an Australian
acoustic and electric guitarist known
for his energetic fingerpicking style.
He has developed his own style based on
the "travis picking" style of playing he
heard played on records by Chet Atkins.

"Travis picking" is a style of finger
picking which involves playing bass with
the thumb, and melody with the first two
or three fingers simultaneously. This
picking style was developed by Merle
Travis, an American country and western
singer and songwriter who composed one
of the early fifties hit songs, "Sixteen
Tons". While we are talking about travis
picking, you have probably heard of Chet
Atkins. He was an influential Nashville
guitarist and producer of records for
many famous recording artists. He played
mostly electric guitar and his picking
technique was inspired mostly by Merle
Travis with musical influences from
Django Reinhardt and Les Paul.

For the acoustic guitar player who
elects to stay with the plectrumn,
"Doc" Watson is an American bluegrass,
folk, country, blues and gospel music
singer and guitar player. He is revered
by other guitar players for his
astonishing flatpicking style although
he does do fingerpicking.

The acoustic guitar repertoire of today
owes alot to the folk revival of the
sixties. Here are some names from that
era whose work you should catch up with:

John Renbourn the English guitarist and
songwriter is best known for his work
with fellow guitar player, Bert Jansch
and his career with the English folk
group Pentangle. Renbourn's musical
interests include early music, folk,
classical music and blues.

Bert Jansch is a Scottish folk musician
whose influences include English
guitarist Davy Graham. His music has
influenced Jimmy Page, Ian Anderson,
Donovan and Neil Young.

John Martyn is an English guitarist who
also sings and writes songs. He has made
twenty studio albums and worked with
famous musician like Eric Clapton, David
Gilmour and Phil Collins. He has
invented his own sound featuring an
acoustic guitar played through a
fuzzbox, phase-shifter and Echoplex.

Davy Graham is a guitarist who featured
heavily in the English folk scene in the
nineteen sixties. Many acoustic guitar
players like Bert Jansch, John Renbourn,
Martin Carthy and Jimmy Page. His
acoustic instrumental piece, Anji was
recorded by Paul Simon on an early Simon
And Garfunkel album.

voices of their children. Others save
romantic missives from a loved one.
People also record the laughter of
friends, or a fragment from a child?s
Christmas performance, or even a beloved
pet?s barking. While other people may
not appreciate the Mp3, the fact that it
has a personal meaning makes those
ringtones music to the owners? ears.

So why do people use Mp3 ringtones? The
same reason they pick the shirt they are
wearing: it reflects the owners?
personality. When they say my phone,
they mean it in more ways than one.
Sociologists say that people are driven
to express identities in external
symbols. It is part of our communal
nature: this is me, this is the group I
belong to. Primitive societies wore
jewelry beads and animal teeth; some

Online Christian Radio Stations

Although I do like a wide variety of
music, sometimes I don't like surprises.
So much of modern rock 'n roll can be
pretty vulgar, and it can really ruin my
mood to hear something I'm not expecting
that offends my tastes. Other people can
listen to what they want, but for me and
my children, only acceptable and
appropriate music will cut it. That is
why, when I will have to put on the
radio, I listen to Christian radio
stations.

The used to be only one Christian radio
station in town. It wasn't bad, but it
was a bit too contemporary for my taste.
I like a mix of different Christian
music. I like some Christian rock and
Christian contemporary, but most of the
stuff I'm really into is the older style
of gospel music. I love bluegrass,
African-American gospel music, and even
older choir music. I like music where
the emphasis is on the voices of the
people singing in harmony, not the
instrumentation or the fancy studio
processing.

That is why it is such a blessing to be
able to use Christian radio stations
online. The great thing about the
Internet is that, no matter what tastes
you have, you can find something that
will gratify them. My some can listen to
Christian rock whenever he wants, and I
can listen to all gospel all the time.

literally giving music away for free
over the web to anyone with an Internet
connection. It is almost too good to be
true.

One of my very favorite ways to listen
to Christian music online is through a
website called Pandora. Basically, you
put in a band or song you like and they
give you other music with a similar

speakers. It lets you hear all kinds of
new bands that play a similar style of
music to the ones you already know you
like. It is one of the best ways I know
to discover new and interesting

Stubb?s Bar-B-Q: Faith and Food, the
Perfect Combination

Sunday mornings are meant for two
things: faith and food. Traditionally,
churchgoers attend mass on Sunday
morning, where they worship and come
together as a community. Also

Sunday breakfast or, depending on

Christian Music's Finest Hour

In February of 2005 Judson Cornwall one
on America?s finest teachers and a
prolific author on the subject of praise
died peacefully after a four year bout
with cancer. For the last quarter of his
life he taught thousands how to praise
God. He started his emphasis on praise
and worship in the church at a time when
the praise and worship element of the
music industry was still in its infancy.

Sometime before this grand old gentlemen
of faith died I heard him tell a story I
have never forgotten. He was called to a

rooms came the sound of the radio with
rock and roll, loud hype and advertising
clamor.

He told them to shut off all the noise
and replace it with praise music, gospel
songs and hymns. They took everything he
said to heart and replaced the sound
clutter with good Christian music. On
his next visit to their house he found a
peaceful setting where each family
member conducted themselves quietly,
courteously and with respect. Sound too
good to be true? Make no mistake, it is
true and it will always work. It is the
combined power of the gospel and of
music.

The Bible says that just a few things
from this present time will cross the
great divide and traverse to the
presence of God. They are the souls of
men, the product of loving deeds, and
yes, music. We will be making music and
singing for all eternity. What does all
this say about music? Simply put music,
anointed Christ honoring music has
connected to it an eternal quality. It
is with good cause that those who are
gifted with the power to communicate
Gods message with musical craft call
their work a ?music ministry.?

Those who labor in a music ministry
today have more tools and opportunities
available to them than at any other time
in history. Modern technology has
spawned electronic production and
replicating devices that can host an
entire orchestra in a tiny bit of
circuitry.

Even with just traditional acoustic
instruments the means of publishing and
distributing the sounds of the many
Jubals God has raised to serve him with
music can be spread around at the speed
of light. MP3s, hi-tech digital editing
gear, and the means of publishing and
reproducing the sound by almost anyone
even at home has nearly transformed the
old lumbering and hapless kind of
promotion known in the past.

So what?s going around these days? It
is an understatement to say that the
best is getting better and the fledgling
sounds of the newbies is bringing up the
rear with great promise and skill.

Cross genre is becoming mixed genre in
gospel music. Seeing Doyle Lawson and
Quicksilver appearing with Bill Gaither
was only the beginning. Bluegrass gospel
is being woven into the fabric of
Southern Gospel and old time quartet
gospel music harmoniously, to borrow a
musical term. Hillsong is now in the
good company of dozens of great
contemporary praise groups and the
sounds of worship are popping up in
country gospel and Southern gospel as
well.

Perhaps only a musician might notice
that there is a kind of admixture of
instrumentation going on these days. I
have played five string banjo for thirty
years and guitar for over forty years
and I listen carefully to instruments
and their places in the overall
presentation of any particular piece of
music.

It is not uncommon today to hear
instruments once reserved for a specific
genre being incorporated into the new
sounds of ecleticity?s finest
productions. Celtic and British Isles
instruments like the penny whistle are
carrying melodious strains in the
backgrounds of many of today?s praise
songs. The mandolin and the hammered
dulcimer normally associated with
Appalachian mountain music are showing
up in every genre both as studio
instruments and stage accompaniment.

Christ has promised that he would pour
out his Spirit in the last days to aide
all those who labor to get his gospel
out to the world. (Joel 2:28) There is
little doubt that Christian musicians
and artists are experiencing some of
that outpouring and it is readily
apparent that their music is rising to
meet the day.

This great company of music makers
perhaps will lead thousands in music for
ages to come. We have so many of them we
expect to hear once again as they bring
us a new song in a new and wonderful
time. Who are they? The names are far
too many but for a cross section just
look at the names I found on just a
couple of CDs featuring Christian music
from various genres in my own recently
purchased collection.

You can imagine the songs; I?ll give you
the names. The Chuck Wagon Gang, Porter
Wagoner, Tennessee Ernie Ford, George
Beverly Shea, The Lewis Family, The
Oakridge Boys, The Statler Brothers,
Bill Gaither, Dottie Rambo, Wendy
Bagwell, Melanie Walker, Suwannee River
Boys, The Ruppes, The Melody Trio,
Keith Green, Hillsong, Amy Grant, John
Michael Talbot, Jeremy Camp, The Katinas
and many others.

Most of us in the Body of Christ cannot
imagine our worship experience in or out
of our respective churches and
gatherings without the sounds of these
wonderful artists and musicians. I hope
I may speak in some small way for all of
us in offering our thanks to you all and
this bit of encouragement. Keep up the
good work because as the Lord pours out
his Spirit you will see the best is yet
to come.

As this old planet hurtles toward the midnight hour and a
great intervention with God what about this Christian music.
